The Mimic Well – Revealed
As witnessed by Olmar Atheron, Resin Armies Community Historian
It began with whispers in the northern wilderness, carried to us by traders with wide eyes and hushed voices. Tales of a peculiar well deep in the Fractured Valley—a seemingly innocuous structure cloaked in creeping vines and nestled among jagged rocks. The Mimic Well, they called it. At first, we laughed. Who would believe such nonsense in an age where magic is tamed and understood, where dangers are charted and recorded? But then came the stories of those who dared approach it.
I heard about the well long before I saw it. As a member of the Resin Armies community, I often document strange phenomena and their potential for inspiring our ever-growing collection of miniatures. But this was different. This was no simple ruin or relic. The well seemed alive, they said, shifting subtly when unobserved, and luring wanderers with faint whispers promising ancient treasure. By the time I decided to investigate, a pattern had emerged: those who ventured too close were never seen again—or returned bearing marks of their survival that chilled the blood.
The Journey to the Well
The trek was grueling. The Fractured Valley is notorious for its unyielding terrain and unpredictable weather, but determination—or perhaps morbid curiosity—propelled our small group forward. Each step through the frostbitten undergrowth felt heavier as we neared the coordinates shared in hushed rumors.
When we arrived, the scene was eerily mundane at first glance: a moss-covered stone well with a wooden frame, surrounded by bramble. Yet, there was a palpable wrongness in the air. The stones seemed almost too pristine, the shadows around it shifting unnaturally, and an odd vibration in the ground beneath our boots hinted at something stirring below.
Then came the whispering. Faint, melodic, and unintelligible, it beckoned us forward, as if weaving through our minds like tendrils of smoke. One of our number, Fenric, a hunter by trade, stepped closer, eyes glazed as if entranced. I grabbed his arm, but the whispers grew louder in my own head, like a thousand tiny voices murmuring secrets. That’s when the ground erupted.
The Mimic Revealed
The well was no well at all. Its wooden frame splintered into writhing appendages as the stones melted into a grotesque, chitinous hide. A great maw, lined with jagged teeth, gaped wide where the bucket once hung, dripping with viscous, green saliva. It let out a shrill, keening cry that froze us in our tracks.
The Mimic Well was a predator, perfectly camouflaged to deceive even the most cautious traveler. As it lashed out with its tendrils, we fought to maintain composure. Our swords and arrows seemed to glance off its hide, striking sparks but leaving no mark. Fenric wasn’t so lucky—its limbs coiled around him and pulled him toward the waiting maw.
I will never forget the way his screams dissolved into silence. The well pulsed as if sated, and for a moment, I thought we were done for. But then, through its monstrous roar, I glimpsed something within its maw: a glimmer of gold and an ancient, rune-etched blade.
The Escape
We fled. My journal, clutched tightly in my trembling hands, recorded little of the flight. The last image burned into my mind was the creature sinking back into the earth, the vines and moss knitting themselves over its form. It resumed the guise of an unassuming well, ready to ensnare its next prey.
Inspiration for Resin Armies
The Mimic Well is a prime candidate for our Legends of the Vale series—a collection that captures the essence of forgotten horrors and ancient secrets. Imagine a miniature of this monstrosity, its tendrils half-formed between wood and flesh, the maw gaping to reveal treasure beyond reach. It’s not merely a challenge for adventurers but a story waiting to be told on every tabletop.
Our community thrives on tales like these, blending creativity with the thrill of discovery. Whether you’re building a diorama of an ancient ruin or staging a battle against eldritch horrors, the Mimic Well brings unmatched character and atmosphere to your campaign.
Explore the wonders of imagination, one miniature at a time.
